Hey everyone! My name is Aslyn (she/her) and I studied abroad for six weeks back in Summer 2019 in Cusco, Peru, through a UF sponsored program called “Experiential Learning in the Health Professions”. I was nervous about going abroad in the summer of my freshman year, but it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve made in college. My program was a perfect fit for me, as I have family connections in Peru with an interest in the Spanish language and culture, as well as in the medical field. While abroad, I was able to shadow with physicians and nurses in local clinics, learn about infectious diseases, and travel in the city and throughout the country, all while living with a host family in Cusco. While I will never forget hiking up Machu Picchu at four in the morning, or jumping into a freezing lake bordering Bolivia, I felt most at home in the city of Cusco, where I was able to explore the Incan history and spend time with my host family while improving my confidence in Spanish along the way. Looking back on my experiences abroad, it makes me excited to help others take advantage of the opportunities to learn internationally, as these trips are truly those of a lifetime.
